Good web resources for third culture issues
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:42:00 PM »

Have you found any? Please share links to sites you have found useful.

I have not found much yet, but it could be that I don't know where to look or what search terms would be most useful on Google and other search sites. Here are a couple of things I found, though.

A good definition and discussion of third culture people from a site called International Schools Services.
http://www.iss.edu/pages/kids.html

Another good definition from the US Government's Department of State.

There was the Global Nomads Virtual Village, a Web 1.0 site that aimed at something similar to what I hope this site will become, and it is certainly dedicated to the same audience, but I can't find anything that has been updated there since July 2006.

I have found a couple of articles worth reading.

Myths of Expatriate Life is an article written by a lady who moved overseas with her husband and aims to clear up some of the romantic ideas people get about the process, while showing some of the actual value and beauty as well. The same author, Barbara Fitzgerald-Turner, has a nice article about Ways to Help Expat Families Adjust.

Here is a nice page with some comments on studying abroad and the myths surrounding it...personally, I would like to see everyone spend at least a few months outside of their home culture. It is life and perspective changing in a good way.

I would definitely agree with that.  That is exactly what I am doing now and I can already "feel" different.  I have a different outlook on life and what is important.  I'm sure that when I get back to the States, there will be more things I realize than I do now.

I bet you are right. Please, let us know what some of those things are as you discover them!

This is a very interesting site with a useful forum full of information about immigration, living and working abroad, moving back, and more...in multiple languages!

http://www.easyexpat.com/

and from the same parent company, http://www.blogexpat.com/ , has a collection of blogs relating to expatriate life.
